PMFJI, but I see the same issue with Slackware. I removed stock freetype
and cairo and did a make clean for freetype, cairo, and ekiga and remade
them.

Libcairo seems to exhibit the problem.

So even after removing the conflicting slack versions, and remaking the
affected packages from scratch, ekiga's make still fails:
