FYI, you do NOT need to be root, to accomplish this. Our recommendation
to not build as root stands even in this case.

If you build GARNOME as a user (either an existing one or a dedicated
'build' user), and use a $prefix that is not in your $HOME but globally
accessible, you get what you are after. I do use /opt/gnome-$VERSION for
this very purpose.

In either case (user or root) you need to adjust the $prefix. And if the
GARNOME build is accessible by all users if you build as root, this
should be the same for any user.
