I've been playing with this today because three people on vastly
different platforms (PPC, x86-64 and x86) have now reported it..

Out of interest, if you replace the desktop/gnome-panel directory with
the attached file, which backs out a 'fix' for loading the GNOME menus
in an idle loop (#164574) does it stop crashing?
