Try this, edit you ~/.bash_profile and change/add your path order. It
should look something like this:

PATH=$HOME/garnome/bin:$PATH:$HOME/bin

Basically make sure that your garnome path appears before your system
path. Then log out and log in again for the new setting to take affect.

To check that your garnome path appears first run this:

echo $PATH

Then just delete your ~/garnome and ~/garnome-2.8.0 dirs and start
everything over again. Build freetype first then 'make paranoid-install'
in desktop/.

FYI: I'm using freetype 2.1.7 on FC2 and it works fine. I'm assuming
that version 2.1.5 should work fine too.
