I just id as you suggested Bob, still no go, the (last few) errors from
running 'make paranoid-install' again in desktop/ follow shortly

My system is SuSE 9.0 with a working, SuSE provided/updated gnome2.4.1
in /opt/gnome. Kernel 2.4.21-166 patched for win4lin. Xorg 6.7

I created a new user named "garnome" to build garnome with, the tarball
was extracted as /home/garnome/garnome-2.8.0. The binaries are ending
up in /home/garnome/garnome.
I compiled freetype and fontconfig in the /bootstrap directory as
directed, ran make clean in the /platform/pango directory then ran
'make paranoid-install' again in desktop/

The most recent error follows:

----------end--------------

I'm also still seeing errors earlier in the process that seem to
indicate that garnome is trying to use information
from /usr/include/freetype2/freetype/ rather than from the freetype
that was compiled from the bootstrap directory.

(example):
/usr/include/freetype2/freetype/tttables.h:663: warning: data definition
has notype or storage class
/usr/include/freetype2/freetype/tttables.h:684: error: parse error
before "FT_Get_CMap_Language_ID"
/usr/include/freetype2/freetype/tttables.h:684: error: parse error
before "charmap"

So I'm still trying but don't seem to be making much headway.
I would love to hear any other Ideas as I am at a loss.

Thanks for your help
