Thanks... hald doesn't take --verbose=yes, but with --daemon=no I was
able to see it was looking for dbus socket in $GARNOME/var/run, but I
had changed dbus to use /var.  I changed dbus to put everything in
$GARNOME/var, which required me copying /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions to
$GARNOME, and changing all references to /var to say $GARNOME/var.

Now both seem to be working nicely.  Thanks!
