Once there was a preference in GNOME panel or in Nautilus (I don't remember
well now) to disable nautilus draw the desktop (the preference was a checkbox
labelled "Use Nautilus to draw the desktop" or similar), but I don't know
if that preference is yet there in the latest nautilus (BTW: which version
are you using?) but (i'm pretty sure) there is GConf key (I didn't remember
its name now) so take a look at the nautilus or desktop gconf keys and you'll
find it.
