libsmbclient is 3.0 only, but versions of it have been available in distros
for ages now, because lots of software has wanted to use it.

This looks like it would end up doing the right thing, but not entirely
sure.

Do you have any $prefix/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libsmb.* files?
