Should have looked a little harder. I have gcc 2.96, and the code in 
question was defining variables after code statements in various blocks, 
something which some gcc 3.x versions (forget which versions, pretty 
sure 3.0.x and 3.1.x don't) allow in C files. Build is chugging along 
again.
