error regarding missing index,sgml

Compiling Garnome 0.24.2 I get the following error (in part):

directory

I read that I could disable gtk docs in gnome/category.mk, which I did. 
But I keep getting this same error. Do I have to do anything else besides 
the change in category.mk? A 'make clean' somewhere?
