I installed gdm 2.4.2.96 with garnome 2.24.2 and I ran into problems
similar to those reported. Seems my problem lies with the bitstream
fonts.

My first install of garnome-0.24.2 was working fine with my old GDM with
a session as described in the notes with garnome (setup for few envvars
and explicit pathname for the gnome-session exec). So, I decided to
implement gdm 2.4.2.96, and since that time, my session doesn't want to
start properly.

My findings are as follow: I can start my old Gnome (1.4) from GDM
2.4.2.96 without a glitch. I can start a failsafe session and start
Gnome 2 from the xterm, setting the envvars and execing gnome-session.
When I put the same lines into my gnome2.session file defined in
gnome2.desktop, I can pick the session from the radiobox window, but the
session fail with the following messages in the .xsession-errors file:
