Weird corrupted graphics?

Folks,
 
Just compiled garnome 0.21.latest from source on my SuSE 8.1 box,
running Accelerated X.
  
Widgets and icons appear to be corrupted; for the full story,
see http://www.enigma.ie/niallm/Screenshot.png --- does anyone
have any idea a) how this might have occurred and b) how to fix it?
