Thanks for all this: I have now solved the problem: I had
scrollkeeper-0.3.4-5 installed (via RPM) and it was being executed
instead of the version that comes with garnome.

I feel so stupid --- a _long_ time ago I had a problem that necessitated
prepending /usr/bin to my path in .bashrc, and of course hacks like lack
tend to hang around unnoticed...
