garnome-0.14.1 and slackware 8.0 won't compile

hey all,

now i've spent (hopefully) plenty of time browsing mailing list archives for
 a solution to this problem.  I was able to find plenty of other people
 having the same exact error, but never any using garnome greater then
 0.8.6....

i'm using garnome-0.14.1 on slackware 8.0.
my distro is close to stock install. i have XFree86-4.1 with 2.4.5 kernel.

the compile fails during pango's make.

so during the compile of garnome i get an error like this:

ok, their is more output that i'm not including because it was long..so i
 left it out.

now i've read in garnome-list archives, that past people on slackware were
having problems.  one fix said to get freetype-2.0.9 installed and it would
work.  the email said pango wouldn't compile/link against freetype-2.1.2.  ??

so i've compiled freetype-2.0.9 but garnome still automatically downloads
freetype-2.1.2



what is the fix to this error?  am i missing some obvious fix that other
 slack users know about?   did i not thouroughly search the net for the fix?
