garnome 0.18.3 build error

I have garnome 0.18.3 and I'm trying to build it. All seems to go well until
we get to libgnomecanvas, I get:

checking for pkg-config... /home/george/garnome/bin/pkg-config
checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.3 libart-2.0 >= 2.3.8 pango >= 1.0.1 pangoft2 >=
1.0.1... Package pangoft2 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `pangoft2.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'pangoft2' found

configure: error: Library requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.3 libart-2.0 >= 2.3.8
pango >= 1.0.1 pangoft2 >= 1.0.1) not met; consider adjusting the
PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard
prefix so pkg-config can find them.
make[4]: *** [configure-work/libgnomecanvas-2.1.0/configure] Error 1

I have tried cleaning out the directories and starting the build over again,
but I still get this error.

I "cleaned up" manually because there seems to be no "make clean". I removed
the $HOME/garnome and $HOME/GNOME/garnome-0.18.3/gnome/*/{cookies,download,work}
directories. I can't imagine this would be a common problem, surely it
would've been noticed.  Not only that, I could've sworn I built 0.18.3
before...

Is there something hanging around that I need to remove to do a clean build to
get this to run?

Thx!

-Michael
