Yeah, fontconfig has no fonts.

No, you should just run it manually (make sure your paths and such are set
beforehand). Check that fonts.conf has the correct paths, etc.

If you're not interested in dealing with all of this stuff, build the stable
GNOME 2.0.2 release with GARNOME 0.17.x.
