Gnome keeps crashing at startup

Dear All,

In answer to the startup problems I had the idea to compile freetype. 
The lastest version can be found via freshmeat.net. After compiling and 
installing freetype I ran fc-cache & fc-list and the startup problems 
were solved for the font problem. I've now got a new problem but haven't 
had the type to solve that one.
