error in compling garnome-0.17.1 (pangox !)

I'm trying to compile garnome-0.17.1 (on debian woody).

I get the error :
"pangox Pango backend is required for x11 target" ! & it exits

was told to install the X development libs & headers. did that thru apt-get from the Debian Cds (xlib6g-dev etc).

But, still get the same error.

Any pointers on how to go about getting to fix this ?
