compile error: possibly involving freetype, definately GTK+

Hello,

I'm in a bind here, and I'm sure it's simple cluelessness on my part, 
but I really some more eyes on this.  It happens during GTK+ 
compilation, apparently due to a problem in libpangoxft.   The endgame 
of the compilation failure is included below.  I'm using Slackware 8.0 
with Gnome 1.4.  I believe I have all the required garnome libraries, 
but am not 100% sure.  The error seems to involve some freetype defines. 
I have XFree86 4.2, on Kernel 2.4.18 on an Athlon chip.  I recently 
installed FreeType 2.1.0 with the font compilation feature enabled in 
hopes of resolving the problem.
