freetype compilation errors.

I'm running a clean install of slackware 8.1  I removed freetype 1.3.1
that came installed with slackware, but the other freetype left is a part
of X, and so I'm afraid to remove it.  is there another way to work around
this problem?

Remove the freetype devel packages you have installed with your
distribution.
