No, you probably don't have the X devel packages installed. You need those.

Guess I hit reply (to Jeff) rather than reply-all on this one, so, with
apologies to Jeff, I'll repeat my reply to him before divulging my
"solution."

      I've got both XFree86-devel-4.2.0-52 and
Xft-devel-1.9.1.020607.1058-3 installed (from rpm's). I even tried
updating my rpm's as follows (but got the same error as above):
   Xft-1.9.1.020626.1517-2.i386.rpm
   Xft-devel-1.9.1.020626.1517-2.i386.rpm
   fontconfig-0.0.1.020626.1517-2.i386.rpm
   fontconfig-devel-0.0.1.020626.1517-2.i386.rpm
   freetype-2.1.2-2.i386.rpm
   freetype-devel-2.1.2-2.i386.rpm
   freetype-utils-2.1.2-2.i386.rpm

It it a location problem? Exploring, I came across the following in
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.1 and /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.1.2 but
/usr/X11R6/include/X11/Xft is empty. However, /usr/include/Xft2/X11/Xft
contains two files; Xft.h and XftCompat.h.

I tried setting up links but couldn't get them to work - not being sure
of what I was doing, I may not have done the right thing. It turns out
the problem is actually in the gtk+ configure file. I excised a few
lines from the file garnome-0.12.2/gnome/gtk+/work/gtk+-2.0.5/configure
(lines 14555-14569 and line 14572) so that gtk+ thinks I don't have
Xft. Compilation proceeds even as I send this off.
