Xft not found

Here's my problem:

==> Building gnome/atk as a dependency 
==> Building gnome/pango as a dependency 
==> Running configure in work/gtk+-2.0.5 
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c 
checking whether build environment is sane... yes 

<snip> 

configure: error: pangoxft Pango backend found, but Xft not found
make[7]: *** [configure-work/gtk+-2.0.5/configure] Error 1

Looking back through the message list I see that sho tamashii was advised,
"Remove the freetype installed with your system - GARNOME installs its own."

Is this what I need to do? I'm running the new Redhat beta (7.3-92) with its own 
Gnome2 and I don't want to mess up my system any more than already have :)
