Very true.  Even under meta/gnome-desktop a noop deep-garchive (i.e. all files
already exist) takes 10+ minutes.

I suppose you could implement some sort of global timestamp file that says
"dependency foo has already been met" that can be checked before forking off a
new make process, but that's probably overkill.
