I suspected that possibly my O3 and athlong specific optimizations might 
have been part of the problem, so I rebuilt kernel and gamin with my 
distro's stock conservative i686 O2 type stuff.  Same results 
unfortunately.

I can't think of much else to tell you about my system.  Using udev.  No 
devfs.

I can provide you access to my machine if this would help.
