Sudoku from Python to Vala

Hi,

I am interested in applying for Google's Summer of Code and getting involved in the Gnome project.

I was looking at the Google Summer of Code project ideas page and saw an idea to port Sukoku from python to Vala, so I read Bug 633464.

This seems like a good beginner project, but I wanted to make sure that it was something the developers are still looking for.  >From the sounds of that bug report, it seems like there is some debate as to whether or not it is needed.

Also, this message (at the very bottom) brought up the issue of GIR in Vala.  I am not really familiar with GObjects or Vala, but from what I can tell GIR in Vala has progressed rather well and that message was posted in 2009.  Does anyone use Vala frequently and know weather or not G-object introspection is fully supported or not?

I have experience mostly with C++, but I don't think learning Vala will be too hard.  I have only used Python for very basic things, but what I did use I picked up quickly.  I was looking at some examples for Vala and it looks pretty interesting.  I think this would be a good starting point to learn the frameworks that are being used in Gnome, particularly since the code exists, albeit in a different language.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
