Web page doesn't mention if this is an original game or inspired by an
existing game which I believe it is but I cannot quite remember what the
game might have been.

Handing over maintainership seems like the last gnome games needs. The
suggestion to remove a game and add a new one was a result of old
difficult to maintain code. Unless you think porting to C would help
dramatically improve the code quality and maitainability it doesn't seem
necessary or even a good idea.
