I think the spamming is more related to that the mailing list addresses
are public and easily harvestable. Also the more you use any mail
address to publicly archived mailing lists there is a good chance some
address harvesters will be able to get them (even with most obfuscation
setups used in archives.).

So you will not get spam for your new @gnome.org address by itself.
