Another approach might be to offer equipment -- a lot of hackers will
be motivated by a new laptop or a hard drive, even more than money.
Such things are even harder to share though.
Maybe 10 pairs of gnome-emblazoned socks as a prize?
As worn by Miguel? ;-) Hmm, well, OK, that's going too far.
I remember Sun offering a $30,000 prize once for an XSL implementation;
it was too small an amount for me to risk spending the time on it,
but if they'd offered, say, a $50K sparc workstation, costing them
about the same amount (perhaps, I'm guessing), it might have sounded
more interesting. I'd no longer have made the calculation of time
vs probable compensation.
