No, I agree.  Jim Getty's thoughts were interesting to me because the
X Consortium was initially hosted by MIT like W3C, and there are some
parallels.  Gnome is in a different situation, but the foundation
still needs to be carefully managed, so as to encourage people and
organisations to contribute, and to keep strong liaisons.
