I must admit, this is the first thing I thought when slates were mentioned,
i.e. 'not very democratic'.
Can people decide which slates they are willing to go on?
Or do they say 'I am willing to be elected to the board', and then anyone
can propose a slate with them on?
I'd prefer voting for individuals, with everyone voting for n people, where
n is the size of the board.
I think it's easy to limit the number of people from one company/geographical
area. You produce the final list of individuals with highest votes first, and
go down it adding people to the board, and once the limit is reached for a
company/area you skip people from that company/area.
Though you might want a completely separate vote for some board positions,
such as the documentation person.
