Open the fonts in fontforge, select the x glyph, in the new window
select any of the points at the top of the glyph and then select
Element→Get Info (or hit Ctrl+I).  You’ll find that the x-height
of Sans is 1120 (on a 2048 pixel em).

Alternatively, use ttx to convert the glyf table to xml and look
at the points for the x glyph.
