Not to rewriting RAW images, but just describe, annotate them by
metadata: keywords, categories, orientation. Why not? It does not
"rewrite" RAW image data or any camera settings.

Sidecar is just sidecar, they are always lost and corrupted. Why not to
use internal place for such information? Why does it need two files
(photo and sidecar) instead of one (photo with metadata)?
