What exactly does f-spot do?

What files precisely does f-stop create?
And where does it create them?
If I import a folder, 
will it make a second copy of all the images in the folder?

I've looked at the rather meagre documentation on f-stop
that I could find, and did not see any answer to these
rather basic questions.
