Here's what I ran from the command line:

env LANG=C gphoto2 --debug --auto-detect --summary --debug
<snip>

via https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgphoto2/+bug/64146

For the lazy:

lsusb to get the device name/id, e.g.:

Bus 001 Device 010: ID 040a:05a2 Kodak Co.

Add to /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules a line with that info, e.g.:

SYSFS{idVendor}=="040a", SYSFS{idProduct}=="05a2", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev"

Restart udev (/etc/init.d/udev restart).

Works!

Who says Ubuntu ain't for humans? ;)
