thumbnails and importing

Two questions:

First when importing from a camera how does f-spot determine if a
photo has already been imported?


Second, how does f-spot generate the file name for the thumbnail
images?  Or is that managed outside of f-spot?

I've recreated my database and now I seem to have about a 1,000 extra
thumbnail images in my home directory.
