These packages are in the universe repository [1] & [2], so that's the
one you need to unlock in your /etc/apt/sources.list

Thanks, Stephane. As soon as I get home I'll add the Ubuntu (not
Kubuntu) repos and see if that helps. I had assumed that whatever is
in the Ubuntu repo would also be in Kubuntu. But we both know what
happens when one assumes!

Ubuntu and Kubuntu repositories are the same, the gnome desktop et al
is installed by ubuntu-desktop; for kde this package is
kubuntu-desktop.  Again, adding universe to your sources is what you
need to do.  A clean install only looks in main, AFAIR.
