I like the idea as well.  I would start by filing an enhancement bug.
In terms of the code, I would imagine we would want to not reinvent the
wheel, and therefore use gstreamer or something similar.  The Diva movie
editor ( http://diva.mdk.org.pl ) might be a good place to start looking
- though gst c# bindings haven't been released yet, he's using gst any
way (check out Gdv/Gdv#).  I think simple inline playing would be
awesome.
