my original problem was that it seemed like neither spamasassin nor bogofilter appeared in evolution. in retrospect I know now that bogofilter was recognised correctly but spamassassin wasn't.

If both are present on a system evolution let's you choose between them by selecting one of them in a dropdownbox - due to spamassassin not being correctly recognised on my system that box was missing and due to bogofilter being unconfigured it didn't detect any spam which led me to thinking neither of them was recognised

As Ralf mentioned, SA is generally used on mail servers and Bogofilter
on clients. Evo does support either, but I've never heard of anyone
using both at once. Presumably you don't see Bogofilter doing anything
because SA has already disposed of the spam, but that's just a guess.
