Does disabling thumbs for this MIME type help -

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.thumbnailers disable
[]
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.thumbnailers disable \
  "['audio/midi','audio/x-midi']"
$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.thumbnailers disable
['audio/midi', 'audio/x-midi']

I *believe* this feature would be part of gnome-core.  Probably best to
start with reporting to your distribution and see if they send you
upstream.
