A few points:

* You don't say what Linux distro you have. 3.10.4 is the Evolution
version used on Fedora 20. Other distros have different versions.

* It's much easier to use the latest version supported on your distro
than to compile Evo yourself unless you really know what you're doing.

* The Evo version is very tied to the Gnome version on your system, so
compiling Evo will often involve compiling parts of Gnome as well, and
taking measures to avoid conflict with an existing Gnome installation.
