You probably upgraded to 13.04 instead, as 13.4 does not exist.

 in the Evolution mail system the category 'Recent Messages' is
missing in the upgraded version.
Want to know why, how to get it back.


That's intentional, as nobody knew what "Recent" objectively means. 
Use "Last 5 days' messages" instead.
