Thanks, will do that. However, when clicking on opening a pdf-file there
are more alternatives than shown in Nautilus. Where do they come from?

No, it does _not_ remember the previous directory. And how to downgrade
the Recently Used option in favor of tre last used filesystem directory?
What is meant by desktop? Perhaps you mean the gdm3 option: I use
gnome-session-fallback
