For those of us who work in non English-speaking environments this kind
of thing gets old pretty quickly. Accents (in Spanish) are something I
need *all the time* and having to type AltGr combos is a cognitive
barrier that interrupts my train of thought.
OTOH I hate non-English keyboards because they tend to hide stuff
like /, @, : and so on. Solution: I use the "US International" keyboard
mode with a US-standard keyboard. I then enter the diacriticals directly
via dead keys, thus I get ÃÃÃÃÃÃÃÃÃ by typing 'a'e`e ... ~n"u^o. Of
course some stuff requires a bit more work which may call for the AltGr
stuff but it tends to be much less used.
The downside is that every time I need to enter my own name I have to
type O' Callaghan :-)
