I've not been following this thread closely, but I don't see the point
of diff'ing two compressed tarballs. You aren't going to get anything
usable as they are essentially binary files.
Correct.
If you just want to see if they are different, use cmp instead, it's
much faster.
Sure, but the output of diff on two binary files is more user friendly
than cmp - I felt that in this case it was more important than raw
speed.
