Hi,
some changes in account preferences aren't propagated immediately and
require evolution's restart (just close and open it). One of them are
connection settings.
I would suggest you to run evolution, disable your GMail account, then
change options in it as described either in the GMail help page (URL
given in some previous mail to your issue), or by users here, then close
evolution, run it again and enable the GMail account. As was mentioned
earlier, consider using IMAP, rather than POP3.
In case it'll still write the error in the status bar, click the icon on
the left of it, and it'll show you more detailed error message.
