How does one start kde manually? (from a console as a user)

I have installed kde-meta and kdebase-startkde but when trying to run
kdestart

DISPLAY=":1" startkde

I get

"$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to xserver."

for any of the different ways I can google.  Note that a gnome session
is running on :0
