Re: [Evolution] won't expunge/empty trash

I removed the two files from .evolution
( "~/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox.ev-summary" and
"~/.evolution/mail/local/Inbox.ibex.index"). Evolution restarted almost
immediately (that is, there didn't seem to be any lag due to recreating

After the "hard" shutdown and restart, moving mail to different folders
seems to be working ok.

But the same problem continues with expunging deleted mail. It doesn't
seem to make any difference whether I use File->Empty Trash of Folder
->Expunge. I keep getting the same "Error while expunging folder"

The entire .Evolution folder is only 890MB with the Mail folder being

/tmp is only 53 MB. (In any case, that should empty out each time I
reboot, shouldn't it?) Where would I see whether there's a max size set
for the /tmp file?

The file system holding /home (/dev/sda3) is only 23% full.

What is the error message? Without knowing that, we can only guess at
the problem.

All is says is "Error while expunging folder."

I also tried to reduce the size of a large folder by moving some
mail to a different folder and got the same kind of error message.

If you moved it to a different real folder without expunging the
original folder, you now have two physical copies of each "moved"

No--I was moving it to a different Evolution mail folder.

I'm assuming you mean not a search folder. That means it's a different
real folder, hence the messages are being copied. Evo uses the IMAP
model (even for local folders), where there is no "move" operation, only
"copy+delete" and of course "delete" means "mark for deletion and
expunge some time later".

First take a look at:

If that doesn't help and the folder you're trying to clear is a local
mbox file, the problem must also be local. The most likely candidates
are 1) the folder is too big (Evo can't handle files above 2GB) or 2)
you're out of disk space either on the filesystem where your mail is
stored, or possibly on /tmp.

If it's (1) then you'll need to shutdown Evo completely (as explained in
the FAQ above) and then prune the file using a text editor. Ask again if
you're not sure how to do this.
