Right, https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=268644

I'm sorry to see the fix got lost in 2.28. I hope it's recoverable.

IMHO the Principle of Least Astonishment dictates that on revisiting a
folder Evo should focus on the last message you were looking at,
rather
than just jumping to the beginning as it often does, or having no
message in focus at all. Evo already keeps a lot of state information
for folders, so I don't see why this is so hard to do.

What about rather https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252922 ?

That would be better than nothing, though not ideal (you would lose the
position of the last message you were looking at, assuming it's now been
marked as Read).

However instead of "oldest unread" I would prefer "first unread", as
defined by the folder sort order rather than date. The user orders the
folder by some preferred criterion and that should be taken into
account. Even the concept of "oldest" isn't clear (sent date?, arrival
order?). Noite that "first" also depends on the whether the folder is
sorted in increasing or decreasing order.

See also https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=587610 for a related
issue.
