The Internet standard for mail attachments is MIME. Assuming you're 
receiving these messages over the Internet, that's the only game in town 
nowadays. This means that the attachments are already encoded in the 
original messages.

I suggest you check the MIME type of the original attachments (look for 
MIME headers and separators in the messages).
