Hi,
gpg is usually invoked when you've checked in the composer's menu
Security either PGP Sign or PGP Encrypt option. Otherwise it shouldn't
be used. Other similar option is in an account preferences, on the tab
Security too. You can indicate there that you want to sign by default,
for example.
